Jorgis's Sea Star Sweater Vest

Writer's picture: Hunter DaumHunter Daum

This pattern was inspired by the 2018 film Just Friends. The characters spend a lot of time wind surfing and standing near the ocean, so the colors are inspired by those beach vibes. More specifically this vest is inspired by this shirt from the movie. Check out my review of Just Friends and enjoy the pattern!

Materials:

3 Yarn Laine Charisma in White (Primary Color)

1 Yarn Laine Facets in Chalk (Secondary Color)

Size 13 circular needles

Set of 4 size 7 double pointed needles

Yarn needle

Pattern notes:

This pattern is written in generalities to allow for custom sizing and difficulty.

The pictured piece was worked on 90 stitches. It was also worked with a long tail cast on, ssk decreases, and slipped all first stitches for a cleaner edge. These skills are not necessary to create the basic pattern.

The entire project is worked with a loose tension, especially any cast offs. The secondary color is a much lighter weight than the primary color but should be worked with the same size needles for everything but the pockets.

Base:

With size 13 needles, cast on stitches to desired circumference around the torso (This pattern works best with multiples of ten, but any even number will work). Join to work in round.

Knit to desired length under the arms.

Divide stitches in half, casting off a few stiches on each side to create arm holes. (Example, if you started with 90 stiches, cast off 5, knit 40, cast off 5, knit 40).

Back:

Using only the stitches for back half of the piece, work in stocking stitch to desired length to base of the neck, decreasing in regular intervals on both sides until piece is the desired width, leaving room for arms and shoulders (Example, decrease at both ends, work 5 rows in stocking stitch, repeat).

Back Neck and Shoulders:

To create the back half of the neck hole, knit a few stitches in to create the shoulder, cast off center stiches, Knit remaining stitches. (Example: Knit 5, cast off until 5 stitches remain, knit 5).

Working on the stiches for one shoulder, continue in stocking stitch decreasing on the neck hole side every other row. When the shoulder has reached the desire length, cast off.

Rejoin the yarn to the other shoulder and repeat on this process.

Front:

Using only the stitches for the front half of the piece, work in stocking stitch to desired base of the V-neck (For a deeper V work fewer rows, for a shallower V work more rows).

Decrease the arm hole edges at the same intervals they were decreased on the back (Example: if the back pattern was work 5 rows, decrease, repeat; then work 5 rows, decrease, repeat, on the front).

When the piece has reached the desired length, work half the stiches, turn, and rework that same half (Example: if you have 30 stitches remaining, work 15, turn, work those same 15).

Work this half until it is the same length as the back piece decreasing the V-neck edge at regular intervals. (Example: Work 2 rows, decrease on V neck edge, repeat). Also continue to work the shoulder side decrease at the same intervals on the front as on the back. When the two side are the same length, cast off.

Rejoin yarn to the other half of the front and repeat the process.

Finishing:

Sew the front and back together at the shoulders. Weave in all loose ends

Edges:

Pick up stitches around the shoulders with the secondary color. Join to work in round. Knit a few rows. Cast off loosely.

Repeat for other shoulder, V neck, and Bottom.

Weave in any loose ends.

Pockets:

Pocket pattern is adapted from this pattern: Stjärna pattern by Karolina Eckerdal

Using size 7 needles, cast on any number of stiches divisible by 5 and greater than 20. Divide the stiches among four needles. Join to work in round.

Knit 5 rows.

Subtract 15 from the number of stiches cast on and divide the remaining number by 5 (Example: 110-15=95, 95/5=19).

Knit this number of stiches, ssk, repeat till the end of the round (Example: Knit 19, ssk, repeat).

Knit 1 round.

Subtract two from the previous number of stitches. Knit this number of stitches, ssk, repeat till the end of the round (Example: 19-2=17. Knit 17, ssk, repeat)

Knit 1 round.

Continue in this manner until 10 stiches remain. Knit 2tog 5 times. Cut yarn and pull through remaining stitches.

Repeat for second pocket. Sew both pockets to the base leaving one edge open.
